Periodontology – Gum Health as the Foundation of a Healthy Smile

Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting apparatus of the teeth – gums, bones and periodontal ligament. Without healthy gums, even the most beautiful teeth do not have a stable foundation. That is why timely gum care is key to maintaining oral health.
At the Andjelkovic Dental Center in Novi Sad, we provide comprehensive periodontal services, including tartar removal, periodontal pocket treatment, and advanced procedures such as incision surgery.

📍 What is tartar and why is it dangerous?

TARTAR is a hardened layer of plaque that is formed by the accumulation of bacteria, food debris and minerals from saliva. It is most often formed at the junction of the gums and teeth, and can also be located below the surface of the gums.

❗ Dangers that tartar carries:

* Chronic inflammation of the gums (gingivitis)
* Pulling the gums
* Creation of periodontal pockets
* Loss of supporting tissue and loose teeth
* Bad breath and bleeding when brushing your teeth

Only with professional cleaning at the dentist can tartar be completely removed.

🔍 Processing of pockets – therapy for periodontitis

When gum disease develops and bacteria penetrate deeper under the gums, the so-called PERIODONTAL POCKETS are formed – spaces between the teeth and gums in which bacteria linger and cause further damage.
Pocket treatment (so-called curettage) is a therapeutic procedure that:

* Removes tartar and bacteria from pockets
* Smoothly shape tooth roots
* Reduces inflammation and depth of pockets
* Helps stop the loss of supporting tissue

There is a closed curettage (for shallower pockets) and an open curettage (for deeper pockets, where a small incision is made for better access).

Cutting surgery – when is it necessary?

When the periodontal pockets are deep and resistant to conservative treatment, flap surgery is performed. This surgical procedure provides direct access to the roots of the teeth and bone, thorough cleaning and tissue regeneration.

The course of flap surgery includes:
* Opening the gums and thorough cleaning underneath them
* Removal of bacteria, tartar and damaged tissues
* Possible bone shaping and/or incorporation of regenerative materials
* Restoring and stitching the gums

Flap surgery significantly contributes to the stabilization of periodontitis and the preservation of teeth that could otherwise be lost.

✅ Why is it important to treat periodontal problems on time?

Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults.
Treatment at an early stage (e.g. by removing tartar) is simple and effective
Untreated periodontitis can affect overall health (associated with diabetes, heart disease, etc.)
With regular check-ups and therapies, the disease can be stopped and kept under control
